The Y helps all achieve to the best of their ability, and our special populations are no exception. The Y’s Bayshore Family Success Center opened our doors to a very special prom night in partnership with Our Special Place and Parents of Special People. Teens with special needs were treated to a Hollywood-style dance party, complete with welcome dose of socialization and fun for kids who wouldn’t normally experience the thrill of prom night with peers.

Upon arrival, guests were given corsages and boutonnieres and had an opportunity to take photos in a 12 passenger stretch Chrysler 300 provided by V.E. I. Limousine before being ushered down the red carpet into the party room. DJ services were donated by C4 Event Group. DJ Steve led the teens in line dances and games, and the dance floor was hopping all night. As a quieter alternative, a game room was also available staffed with peer volunteers, games and a photo booth.

Although this was an independent social activity, parents remained on site and enjoyed dinner and dessert, with an occasional peek at on their party-goers!

For some of our guests, this will be the only prom they get to experience and the Y was thrilled to provide them with this opportunity. In addition to the parents being on site, approximately 20 volunteers and staff members were at the center to coordinate set up, break down and to help during prom. We are grateful to the entire network of volunteers, collaborators and corporate donors who came together to make this idea come to life and give children of all abilities a most-memorable prom experience!
