150 Years Strong
YMCA Gala Raises Over $200,000 to Support Access for All

SHREWSBURY, NJ (Nov. 21, 2024) – The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County marked its 150th anniversary in style, hosting a gala on Nov. 14 that raised over $200,000 to ensure that its life-changing programs remain accessible to all, regardless of ability to pay.

Held at the Shadowbrook in Shrewsbury, the milestone event drew more than 300 guests for an evening of celebration, recognition, and inspiration.

The event spotlighted the contributions of PNC Bank and five longtime supporters: Bruce Lakefield of Rumson and Naples, FL; Danny Matarese from Morganville; Peter McCarthy of Little Silver; Chris Mosley of Colts Neck; and Carol Stillwell, who resides in Holmdel.

The honorees were recognized for their commitment to the YMCA’s mission of fostering community, promoting health and well-being, and nurturing personal growth for people of all ages and backgrounds.

“Their support has been instrumental in expanding our Y’s reach and impact over the years,” said the organization’s Chief Volunteer Officer Michael A. Wright. “They’ve helped guide us through the good times and the challenging ones.”

In a heartfelt and surprising moment, the Y’s President and Chief Executive Officer Laurie Goganzer took the floor to perform “If You’re Out There,” a song written by John Legend that reinforced the Y’s focus on building a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Another highlight of the evening featured Peterson Bellinger, 26, a former participant in Y programs who has since become a successful engineer. In a video testimonial, Bellinger shared how the YMCA helped shape  his path and expressed gratitude to honoree Carol Stillwell for her support, which made opportunities like his possible.

Proceeds from the gala will directly fund the Y’s charitable mission to provide financial assistance for programs that strengthen youth, such as child care, summer camp and teen leadership, healthy living initiatives, as well as social responsibility efforts.

Goganzer thanked the evening’s supporters for believing in the Y mission. “You’re the ones who show up and support us year after year. Whether it’s helping a child learn to swim, a family to feel secure or a young person to find their voice, your support is the heartbeat of our Y,” she said.

The Y’s Chief Development Officer Pam Hearn said the event’s success would not have been possible without the efforts of the gala committee, led by co-chairpersons Samara O’Neill and Irene Hall. “The committee created an unforgettable evening that honored our Y’s legacy while championing its future,” she said.
